Vaccine Guide

A plain-language guide to vaccines for dogs and cats in South Africa, what they cover, when they're due, and why they matter.

Dogs

Core Dog Vaccines

Distemper, Hepatitis & Parvovirus (DHV)

Puppy series at 6–8, 10–12, and 14–16 weeks, then annually

The foundational vaccine for dogs. Protects against three serious and often fatal viral diseases.

Rabies

From 12 weeks, then every 1–3 years depending on product

Legally required in many areas. Protects pets and humans, rabies is fatal once symptoms appear.

Kennel Cough (Bordetella)

Annually or before boarding

Recommended for dogs that socialise, board, or attend daycare. Reduces severity of respiratory illness.

Cats

Core Cat Vaccines

Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus & Panleukopenia (FVRCP)

Kitten series at 6–8, 10–12, and 14–16 weeks, then annually

The core "three-in-one" for cats. Covers upper respiratory viruses and a severe gastrointestinal disease.

Rabies

From 12 weeks, then every 1–3 years

Important for cats with outdoor access. Protects them and reduces zoonotic risk to your household.

Feline Leukaemia Virus (FeLV)

Recommended for outdoor or multi-cat households

FeLV weakens the immune system over time. Vaccination is especially important for cats that go outside.
